I don’t have anything interesting to say…Why would I then try to write a book?
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
If you are in business, that suggests that people are interested in what you have to say. Not only that, people would also be interested to read a book written by you.
Sometimes we need to hear others point out the obvious.
Let’s look more closely at this. Why do you get out of bed every morning and do what you do? Is it a sense of purpose? Is it because you want to be able to make some change in the world? Is it because people want to hear what you are saying?
These types of reasons are also reasons to publish a book. Another benefit of writing a book is that it will help you clarify what your purpose and to deconstruct what you do into simple steps that will assist your existing and future customers.
Consider these questions:
What are the most common questions I am asked by my existing and potential customers?
What aspects of my expertise are most often under-valued and under-utilised?
What idea do I most often find myself talking about with customers or colleagues?
Are there areas in my expertise that I would like to refine and deepen my knowledge?
When you are really clear about your topic it will also help you to:
Put together a draft table of contents so you know what you are going to cover.
Make sure you can explain to anyone in less than a minute what your book is about.
Draft the back cover copy for your book, keeping in mind what will make people want to read it.
Figure out why someone would want to read your book rather than someone else’s book on the same topic.
By going through this process you’ll be even more clear about your business and the services that your customers want and need. You will be a better mentor for your customers.
What are you waiting for?
Chances are there are many people that you already know that want to read about your ideas. Another benefit is that your customers will become advocates for your brand and share your book with others.
Now have another think about whether or not anyone would be interested in what you have to say…
